Mobility & Urban Safety Testbed

Project description

The Mobility & Urban Safety Testbed (MUST) project addresses the growing need for advanced safety systems in urban mobility, driven by vehicle automation, connectivity, and the complexities of smart cities. As urban environments become more dynamic, the safety of all road users, including drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and users of emerging transport like e-scooters, must be ensured. The project responds to the requirements of the New Vehicle General Safety Regulation (GSR), which mandates the integration of safety systems for connected and autonomous vehicles in the EU. The core of the project is the development of a testbed that enables extensive experimentation and evaluation of AI-driven safety systems. This testbed provides a controlled environment to test risk mitigation strategies under various urban traffic conditions. The project leverages the AstaZero test track facility in Sweden and the test Track for Automated and Connected Driving (TAVF) in Hamburg, Germany, which offer real-world settings to test and refine these strategies, ensuring they are scalable and effective in diverse urban environments. More specifically, the project aims to automate the evaluation and optimization of safety strategies, using AI-driven tools to dynamically assess risk in urban traffic conditions. The test tracks will provide key testing grounds to enable experimentations and validation of various safety interventions, from driver-assist technologies to V2V (Vehicle-to-Vehicle) and V2I (Vehicle-to-Infrastructure) coordination systems.
