France in ITEA

France, a very strong supporter of ITEA 1 and ITEA 2, has revived its interest in ITEA 4. Remarkably, 13 out of the 16 ITEA 1 and 2 Calls feature award-winning projects with French participation, showcasing the invaluable contributions of French partners within the ITEA programme. Through their involvement in ITEA projects, several prominent industry partners have secured multimillion-euro contracts or potentially averted multimillion-euro losses. Notably, Smart Engineering emerges as the primary focus within ITEA projects with French involvement, followed by Smart Communities and Safety and Security.

Funding information for France

For French participants, there are 2 types of funding, depending on the size and characteristics of the project.

The first type of funding is called innovation aid or Aide à l'innovation. It takes the form of a subsidised rate loan or a repayable advance of up to 3 million euros. The French firm must have less than 2,000 full-time equivalents to be eligible. Academic partners are not eligible for this funding but may participate as subcontractors. The project must last up to 3 years.
The second financing option is i-Démo, reserved only for projects with a cumulative French budget of over €4 million, with at least one French SME or company with less than 2,000 FTE in the consortium and with no more than 6 French participants. The project must last between 2 to 5 years and can include an industrial R&D phase and/or an experimental development phase. This funding is a mix between a repayable advance and a grant. In this case, academic partners are eligible to this funding.

In both cases: the project, and the French participant's technical and financial capacity to carry it through must be assessed by Bpifrance. What is recommended to French firms is to contact our team as early as possible before submission to check eligibility to funding.

Impact is one of the main ambitions in ITEA. Impact on business, on the market, on society. This is a key value in ITEA, and impact and potential impact are central during the project lifecycle: in project evaluation, monitoring, closure and in communication of the results. In the realm of developing new functionalities, engineers often discover that their profound understanding of the physics governing their products falls short when it comes to crafting functions for embedded targets. While this might result in a never-to-be-realised excellent initial idea of operating and controlling their product in a much smarter way, at the same time it reveals the need for a link between the digital simulation of real-world physics and embedded software leveraging on such physics models. EMPHYSIS established a new open standard - eFMI® - laying the foundation to develop innovative tools, facilitating the realisation of model-based functions directly in embedded software with improved code efficiency.

FUSE-IT Impact story

FUSE-IT addressed the need for sustainable, reliable, user-friendly, efficient, safe and secure Building Management Systems in the context of smart critical sites, like hospitals. From a site management perspective, it solves the dilemma of efficiency and security in intelligent buildings. At the user level, a smart unified building management interface enables the daily monitoring and control of a building, while a full security management interface enables the supervision of both physical and logical security throughout the premises. And at the end-user level, this can save both energy and lives.

Industry statements from France

After the ITEA project FUSE-IT, Airbus CyberSecurity has been awarded a €740,000 contract to fulfil risk assessment surveys on 14 sites of Airbus Defence and Space in Spain, France, the UK and Germany and a contract worth €500,000 to secure a data centre organisation against cyber and physical threats. In addition, Airbus CyberSecurity has been awarded a multimillion-euro contract with an important gas transportation company, an integration contract for the protection of a large data centre's infrastructure and several contracts with large energy production utilities and distribution system operators in the UK, France and Germany.

For Dassault-Aviation, MODRIO has enabled many very useful breakthroughs for the design of next-generation aircraft, in particular the results regarding the modelling of requirements and system architecture, associated with fast multi-core simulations, multi-mode modelling of system failures and safety analysis. Output from ITEA projects like MODRIO has brought Dassault-Aviation capabilities that allow different working methods to handle complex systems, thereby contributing to the global (digital) transformation of the company.

CyberFactory#1

Addressing opportunities and threats for the Factory of the Future (FoF)

The ITEA project CyberFactory#1 has designed, developed, integrated and demonstrated a set of key enabling capabilities to foster the optimisation and resilience of the Factory of the Future (FoF). The impact is expected to reach around €150M additional revenues for the project partners and 450 extra jobs by 2025. For these achievements, the CyberFactory#1 consortium was awarded the ITEA Award of Excellence 2022 for Business Impact!

Advanced Co-simulation Open System ARchitecture

The ACOSAR project was selected, amongst others, because of its excellent achievements on Co-Simulation, which is very innovative and will have a high impact on the automotive market. It is impressive how it managed to standardise the Distributed Co-Simulation Protocol under the roof of the Modelica Association. The ITEA Board also appreciates its communication efforts, in particular via their newsletter.
