Austria in ITEA

The Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) is the national funding agency for industrial research and development in Austria. Research, development and innovation are central drivers for economic, technological and social development, and about 59% of FFG funding goes to projects with a strong focus on digitalisation. FFG supports instruments like ITEA to boost progress in Austria on the premise that businesses that undertake research grow faster, achieve higher export rates and create more employment than those who don’t.

Impact is one of the main ambitions in ITEA. Impact on business, on the market, on society. This is a key value in ITEA, and impact and potential impact are central during the project lifecycle: in project evaluation, monitoring, closure and in communication of the results. From industrial automation to healthcare, Internet of Things (IoT) has impacted nearly every aspect of our lives. However, the cost pressure of making IoT devices as smart, cheap and energy efficient as possible affects both manufacturing and design costs, with software design accounting for around 45% of the overall System-on-Chip development effort. Fast and efficient software development is thus a key enabler of future growth within the IoT domain. The ITEA project COMPACT brought together 15 partners from Austria, Finland, and Germany to address these challenges.

A wide range of computer-aided engineering (CAE) software tools already enables virtual material and product design, virtual manufacturing and machining process parameterisation, and virtual product testing of high-tech materials. However, these tools are rarely interoperable and contain multiple native formats for storing the CAE data to be transferred between simulation code. The VMAP project has created the world’s first CAE workflow interface standard for integrating multidisciplinary and multi-software simulation processes in the manufacturing industry and its major result is simple: setting up and adapting workflows in computer-aided engineering is now quicker, easier and more cost-effective than ever before.

The global incidence rate of cancer is expected to grow by 70% over the next two decades, with Radiation Therapy (RT) treatment currently recommended for 52% of new patients. Although radiation oncology has caused a drop in mortality for several cancers, the need remains to reduce side effects. The solution lies in ‘first-time-right’ treatment in which the right dose is given to the tumour while keeping the dose to healthy tissue as low as possible. STARLIT - a follow-up to the award-winning ITEA project SoRTS developed technology to improve treatment accuracy and minimise the unintended dose in image-guided radiation therapy.

VMAP

A new Interface Standard for Integrated Virtual Material Modelling in Manufacturing Industry

VMAP was selected, amongst others, because we particularly appreciate your effort to create a vendor neutral standard for the Computer Aid Engineering data storage and transfer. The project has been able to demonstrate the benefits of the approach on several use cases and to convince outside the consortium the CAE stakeholders to adopt the proposed standard.

ACOSAR

Advanced Co-simulation Open System ARchitecture

The ACOSAR project was selected, amongst others, because of its excellent achievements on Co-Simulation, which is very innovative and will have a high impact on the automotive market. It is impressive how it managed to standardise the Distributed Co-Simulation Protocol under the roof of the Modelica Association. The ITEA Board also appreciates its communication efforts, in particular via their newsletter.

SAFE

Safe Automotive soFtware architEcture

TheSAFE project provided an architecture description language, a set of tools and some methods and application rules. SAFE’s involvement in Standardisation bodies has been tremendous: some of the authors of ISO26262 took part in the project and through the first WW implementation SAFE pushed some requests to reformulate the norm. Beside this major involvement SAFE has also impacted EAST-ADL, AUTOSAR, EICOSE, and OMG ensuring some coherence between these different standards taking advantage of its key position in ISO26262.
