Rainwater Harvesting prediction and management system for sustainable urban development

Project description

Problem statement: Wastewater treatment plants and sewer systems face significant challenges in predicting and managing rainwater due to outdated infrastructure, climate change, and limited use of smart technologies. Extreme weather events and unpredictable rainfall patterns often overwhelm existing systems, leading to flooding and untreated sewage discharge. Many urban sewer networks, particularly combined sewer systems, mix rainwater with wastewater, resulting in frequent overflows during heavy storms and contamination of water bodies. Rapid urbanization has led to increased impervious surfaces in cities, resulting in excessive stormwater runoff, urban flooding, and the degradation of water quality due to pollutants entering natural water bodies. Climate change exacerbates these issues with more frequent extreme weather events like heavy rainfall and droughts. There is a pressing need for innovative solutions that enhance urban resilience, optimize water resource management, and mitigate flood risks. Project description: Develop a rainwater harvesting prediction and management system with VR training capabilities for wastewater treatment plants and sewers systems integrated to a municipality's construction and urban planning framework. The system will utilize climate models to predict rainfall patterns and optimize the design, placement, and operation of rainwater harvesting systems to operate wastewater and sewers systems safely and more efficiently, and to support new and existing construction projects within the municipality. The platform will use sensors to feed the platform with real data essentially our solution will be a mixture of geographical information systems, hydrological modeling software with sensors, with a VR training capabilities. Goals: The platform will help address water scarcity and flood mitigation by providing tools to the users so they can train, understand, design and implement rainwater and harvesting systems to operate wastewater and sewer system plants.
