Germany in ITEA

Germany has been supporting and contributing to ITEA since its start, including very active Board companies and a strong relationship with the Public Authorities for nearly 25 years now. German projects often had a strong focus on Smart engineering, with several highly successful 'strings of pearls'. In the meantime the focus is shifting to AI with several promising projects. German partners are involved in more than 20 Award-winning ITEA projects, clearly demonstrating their success, both on economic and societal scale. The German partners recognise the value that participation in ITEA projects brings them.

Impact stories with German participation

Impact is one of the main ambitions in ITEA. Impact on business, on the market, on society. This is a key value in ITEA, and impact and potential impact are central during the project lifecycle: in project evaluation, monitoring, closure and in communication of the results. Today’s control of industrial processes is done in a highly centralised and hierarchical manner. Future concepts like component based and collaborative automation require much more distributed control functionalities. To support this development, OPTIMUM addresses enhancing the aspects of distributed control, adaptation of IoT technologies to industrial needs, enhancement of control and assistance applications by context and location awareness as well as common-model based 3D engineering and supervision. Thus it will support partners and industry in general to get ready for Industry 4.0 challenges.

From industrial automation to healthcare, Internet of Things (IoT) has impacted nearly every aspect of our lives. However, the cost pressure of making IoT devices as smart, cheap and energy efficient as possible affects both manufacturing and design costs, with software design accounting for around 45% of the overall System-on-Chip development effort. Fast and efficient software development is thus a key enabler of future growth within the IoT domain. The ITEA project COMPACT brought together 15 partners from Austria, Finland, and Germany to address these challenges.

In the realm of developing new functionalities, engineers often discover that their profound understanding of the physics governing their products falls short when it comes to crafting functions for embedded targets. While this might result in a never-to-be-realised excellent initial idea of operating and controlling their product in a much smarter way, at the same time it reveals the need for a link between the digital simulation of real-world physics and embedded software leveraging on such physics models. EMPHYSIS established a new open standard - eFMI® - laying the foundation to develop innovative tools, facilitating the realisation of model-based functions directly in embedded software with improved code efficiency.

Thanks to participation in the ITEA SAFE project, Continental established the ISO 26262 compliance in two major domains, namely the safety critical domains of powertrains and chassis brake systems. These domains represent 40% of Continental’s product share and thanks to the SAFE project, Continental was able to keep its leading role in these domains.

AIToC

Artificial Intelligence supported Tool Chain in Manufacturing Engineering

Using advanced AI, the ITEA project AIToC has created a set of tools that overcome these challenges. These tools help with planning processes, the creation of models of factories, and the design of better layouts for assembly stations, all of which make manufacturing more efficient and effective. The AIToC project received the 2024 ITEA Award of Excellence in the category ‘Business impact’ for this great achievement.

OPTimised Industrial IoT and Distributed Control Platform for Manufacturing and Material Handling

The ITEA project OPTIMUM enables machines of different kinds and from different manufacturers to communicate with each other and their operators, improving the worker’s and equipment’s safety. In recognition of this exceptional achievement, OPTIMUM received the Special ITEA Award of Excellence today in all three nomination categories: Innovation, Standardisation and Market Impact.
