ITEA Award for Exceptional Excellence for project SMART
Project SMART, to which Royal HaskoningDHV makes an important contribution, has won the ITEA Award for Exceptional Excellence. SMART provides city planners and managers with a flexible solution, facilitating data-driven decisions for improved urban mobility and traffic transit for all modes of transportation.
Promising a reduction in traffic congestion by 10-15%, the Spatial Modelling Analytics & Real-time Tracking (SMART) mobility project provides city planners and managers with a flexible solution. It facilitates data-driven decisions for improved urban mobility and traffic transit for all modes of transportation.
The objective of SMART is to mitigate growing urban traffic congestion challenges and the associated issues of environmental degradation, as well as economic inefficiency and the negative impacts to the quality of life of citizens.
"We work to improve the flow of traffic in a safe, liveable environment. This award is an important recognition of our commitment to innovation and collaboration at an international level." Walter Fransen - Senior Consultant Smart Mobility, Royal HaskoningDHV
The ITEA project SMART is a collaboration between ViNotion, IRD, Cyclomedia, Geotab ITS, Esri Canada, Eindhoven University of Technology, and Royal HaskoningDHV.
Data-driven decisions that improve urban mobility and traffic
SMART's integrated approach, which uses advanced sensors and vehicle-to-everything communications, provides comprehensive traffic insights and enables adaptive control strategies. By leveraging the capabilities of 4D spatial technology and analysis platforms using real-time vehicle location and movement data, SMART promises a reduction in traffic congestion by 10-15%.
Research in the municipality of Helmond
Within project SMART, together with ViNotion and the municipality of Helmond, Royal HaskoningDHV conducted research to test the assumption that Intelligent Transport System (ITS) applications such as Flowtack function better if more Cooperative Awareness Messages (CAM messages) are available. The research demonstrated that adding CAM messages from cameras is possible and has the potential to ensure that intelligent traffic light systems can manage traffic proactively and smartly. The result? Fewer red lights and fewer double stops.
Outstanding technical contributions through international cooperation
The ITEA Awards of Excellence are presented annually by ITEA4 (Information Technology for European Advancement), a European strategic research programme aimed at developing software-intensive systems and services. The awards recognise projects that make outstanding technical contributions and achieve significant results through international collaboration.
