Each year the Board Support Group together with the Steering Group, nominates three or four outstanding ITEA projects for the ITEA Awards of Excellence. With these ITEA Award of Excellence, we aim to highlight concrete examples of best practices by acknowledging outstanding achievements – high-level technical contributions based on true international collaboration that lead to significant results and thus further promote the programme and its goals.

PARTNER was selected, amongst others, because the ITEA Board particularly appreciates the strong potential impact of the project for the partners business. The integration of medical data has been demonstrated in different use cases and shown that it can highly facilitate the patient and the clinicians life.

BIMy was selected, amongst others, because the ITEA Board particularly appreciates its innovative approach in coupling Building Information Modelling and Geographic Information Systems to create new business opportunities. A new Interface Standard for Integrated Virtual Material Modelling in Manufacturing Industry
VMAP was selected, amongst others, because we particularly appreciate your effort to create a vendor neutral standard for the Computer Aid Engineering data storage and transfer. The project has been able to demonstrate the benefits of the approach on several use cases and to convince outside the consortium the CAE stakeholders to adopt the proposed standard.

EMPHYSIS was selected, amongst others, because we particularly appreciate your overall achievements in terms of innovation, business opportunities and standardisation. Your approach has been successful to provide significant gains for the development of embedded systems and to create a new standard.

Flex4Apps is another ITEA success story on the important topic of the full digital loop offering monitoring and analytics of modern systems made available to companies of any size (SME to large enterprise). The ITEA Board appreciated its hyperscale and microcare abstraction.
Engineering Tool Chain for Efficient and Iterative Development of Smart Factories
ENTOC has developed a seamless engineering tool chain for manufacturing equipment in complex production plants to increase efficiency, maturity and innovation. This project impressed the ITEA Board on the level of innovation that was deployed in this project.

MOS2S is a multimedia project which developed new ways of engaging audiences for new entertainment experiences but also to enhance our E-Democracy. MOS2S deserved the award for its societal innovation and exploitation.

Reflexion scored at a level never achieved before in ITEA, with the highest possible score on both Innovation and Business impact! The project was selected, amongst others, because The ITEA Board particularly appreciates the different cases of full digital loop from the design, instrumentation of products and services, data acquisition, data analysis to the feedback provided to the design team. This is actually the full path of digitalisation that ITEA is fighting for.
Open Cyber-Physical System Model-Driven Certified Development
The OPENCPS project was selected, amongst others, because it is unique in dealing with the complexity of large Cyber-Physical Systems. The use of open standards and open-source solutions to integrate different kind of models to design complex CPS, will democratise the usage of modelisation, especially for SME's. The good examples of exploitation, in particular with Saab and Siemens, are impressive.
Advanced Co-simulation Open System ARchitecture
The ACOSAR project was selected, amongst others, because of its excellent achievements on Co-Simulation, which is very innovative and will have a high impact on the automotive market. It is impressive how it managed to standardise the Distributed Co-Simulation Protocol under the roof of the Modelica Association. The ITEA Board also appreciates its communication efforts, in particular via their newsletter.
Better Effectiveness aNd EFficiency by measuring and modelling of Interventional Therapy
BENEFIT was selected because of the advanced patient models and associated enhancement in diagnosis quality and productivity and the ability to measure and gather quantitative data before/during/after the clinical treatment and prepare it for decision support. There were 8 patents applied and the project had very realistic use-cases. Finally, the unique impact on the market was very impressive with 13 fast exploitation results by Elekta (already 50+ ICON GammaKnife products sold), Philips and Quantib, CE and FDA approvals for new products, incredible growth of companies like FEops (from 3 FTEs -> 20 FTEs) or Quantib who secured €4.5mln of fresh capital to support Quantib with her international scale-up ambitions.
Future Unified System for Energy and Information Technology
From the proposal stage of the FUSE-IT project, the partners bet on a revolutionary way to look at the security access business, breaking the silos between energy management and security itself. The ITEA Board is very proud the FUSE-IT project delivered its promise and opened the door for new business for the involved companies. The project was far forward-thinking! Important results from the FUSE-IT project were the patented authentication for very slim IoT, the security for applications collecting IoT data, the advanced micro-grid technologies and the integration of these different technologies.
Collaborative City Co-design PlatfOrm
The C3PO project was selected, amongst others, because of the impressive results on smart city solutions using new technologies and integration of multiple ontologies thus avoiding potential silos which were one of the key pain points resulting from the ITEA Smart City customer workshop. Also the involvement in several city trials was highly rated as were the different new visualisation concepts (Transportable Immersive 3D Cave, AR and VR applications). The impact on the market was incredible with a new company (FCG City Portal Ltd Finland) and a very large number of new products pushed by the different partners.
Identity, Doc, Exchange, Authentication 4 Systems Worldwide Interconnections of Frequent Travelers
The IDEA4SWIFT project was selected, amongst others, because of its revolution on the control gate design, the level of integration of multi-biometric systems and the level of efficiency of the algorithms in terms of recognition and speed. Furthermore the ITEA Board was impressed by its social impact speeding up the flow and increasing the level of security an the dissemination of its results in a world premiere in Singapore.
System of Real-Time Systems
SoRTS demonstrated minimally invasive, image-guided intervention and treatment for cancer. SoRTS showed a unique, deep and strong partnership between Elekta and Philips with the rest of the consortium. SoRTS has outperformed in all the dimensions of the project. It delivered a unique innovation to synchronise imaging and radio therapy with some world-first real-time demonstrations and designed and executed a strong strategic dissemination targeting the different stakeholders (strikingly, eight iconic hospitals worldwide are now already equipped). It managed to mobilise all companies at every level to be strongly involved and thus ensure exploitation of the project results. The CEO of Elekta announced during a capital investment meeting the sales target of these new products.
Test methodology for virtual commissioning based on behaviour simulation of production systems
AVANTI came up with a Smart manufacturing solution, with virtual commissioning to facilitate components-based engineering in a virtual orchestration of physical properties. The project has a direct impact on the organisation of industrial plants in all application domains: the AVANTI project has resulted in an efficiency improvement of 25-30 % in production preparation. Already at the final review stage of the project, Daimler had 30 persons working with the tools that resulted from the project. Katron introduced a virtual commissioning simulator as a product, EKS introduced a virtual commissioning test generation and execution tool, and Moventas introduced a process simulation tool for wind turbine gearboxes. You also managed to produce two contributions to the standard AutomationML. Not only did AVANTI have a direct impact on improving the final quality of the product, it also accelerated production by reducing production/testing time, and ultimately boosted the overall productivity.
Smart Energy Aware Systems
SEAS proposed an interoperability solution to deploy micro grids at both the production and consumption level. This is a significant response to the green energy transition, which requires such a level of interoperability to fully open up the value chain to numerous new players. During the SEAS project partners designed a very innovative architecture allowing free interoperability, for multi-constructor legacy as well as future innovations and different kind of business models, based on an advanced dynamic ontology. The consortium has been able to create immediate success stories (energy optimisation for different cities). Furthermore, it defined strong commercial targets for the actors of the project. SEAS has got its first recognition at standardisation level. A European association has been announced to ensure the follow-up of this project.
My Mobile and Smart Health Care Assistant
SMEs make up half of the manpower of all ITEA projects, so the ITEA Board is proud that SMEs are also among the success stories to receive an award. The partners in the MoSHCA project developed mobile health assistants for different applications, in particular rehabilitation and epilepsy. The SensiStep delivers real-time information about the strain a patient places on his/her leg while performing an exercise. For Epilepsy MoSHCA developed signal processing to analyse and classify sounds to detect the low signal which indicates the onset of an epilepsy attack. MoSHCA is a project by SMEs and led by an SME that has resulted in a long list of innovations and immediate impact on the market.
Attack Detection And Countermeasures Simulation
ADAX focussed on Attack detection and counter-measures simulation. It shortened time to respond and optimise cost of counter-measure and reduced the false alarm from 10% to less than 1%. Furhtermore, they increased the detection rate from 65% to 99% and reduced the decision-making time from 1h to 3mn and the cost of counter-measure from 270K€ to 100K€
These innovation results create a unique selling proposition resulting in some impressive fast exploitations.
A Reconfigurable Surveillance System with Smart Sensors and Communication
Reconsurve developed a reconfigurable and scalable maritime surveillance framework with multi-modal smart sensors. This responds to a societal demand to master the maritime surveillance for the interest of the population.
Reconsurve pushed innovations like: Situational Awareness component to decreases the overload on operators as well as captains and UAV integration into the maritime domain. To push these innovations they have involved end-users like the Turkish and French coast guards, from the beginning. Their role has been divers: definition of suspicious behaviour, identification of operational needs, prioritisation of the project objectives, approving the system design, participating to project meetings including coordination and review meetings, and in particular, hosting a Turkish full scale demonstration which was conducted in Antalya, Turkey. The ITEA Board is convinced that their user focus has been the root of the success of the project.
HPC is the universal tool for scientific discovery and engineering. It requires quicker processor power than standard processors roadmap. The path is on heterogeneity with GPU and many core. H4H enhanced the State of the Art on several dimensions:
1) Provided more dense computing power with less energy consumption and more efficient cooling
2) Provided appropriate programming models and guidelines/best practices
The results are a set of impressive fast exploitation, like the launch of Bull Sequana - the 1st range of Exascale ready supercomputers and different optimisation tools and simulation have taken advantage of the H4H architecture. They show a worldwide business impact map which cover all the continents.
Safe Automotive soFtware architEcture
TheSAFE project provided an architecture description language, a set of tools and some methods and application rules. SAFE’s involvement in Standardisation bodies has been tremendous: some of the authors of ISO26262 took part in the project and through the first WW implementation SAFE pushed some requests to reformulate the norm. Beside this major involvement SAFE has also impacted EAST-ADL, AUTOSAR, EICOSE, and OMG ensuring some coherence between these different standards taking advantage of its key position in ISO26262.
Extendable Architecture and Service Infrastructure for Cloud-Aware Software
In front of the diversity of deployed cloud offers, the EASI-CLOUDS project developed a whole chain for cloud federation including simple application development tools. EASI-CLOUDS proposed some tailored SLA facilities. All these developments enabled new business models via real-time rating, charging and revenue sharing. With this award, the ITEA Board recognises the EASI-CLOUDS results in fast exploitation with your 4 products: SaaS edition, including SLA negotiation, demonstrated between Amazon, CloudWatt, Numergy on use cases like Cloud-based brain image processing, on-demand photo stitching. The Hybrid Cloud edition. The Broker edition, demonstrated on the use case in evaluating game server performance. The Federation edition, completed by 3 added services: Cloud development tools, Billing as a Service and Security as a Service, all of which has led to a set of fast exploitations.
