ASIMOV Cookbook: best practices for building autonomous and self-optimising cyber-physical systems

Are you a strategist, R&D manager, systems architect, or system engineer exploring system optimisation and considering AI? The ITEA ASIMOV project's Cookbook offers a valuable starting point, guiding system architects and engineers on how to build complex high-tech CPSs (Cyber Physical Systems) that autonomously select optimal settings with minimal time and external expertise. It shares lessons learned, insights gained, and best practices developed during the recently completed ASIMOV research project, which ran from June 2021 until May 2024.

The ASIMOV project researched innovative technologies, combining AI and digital twinning, that can be used to create autonomous and self-optimising CPSs. The project identified good practices and lessons learned to help answer the question: "How to build complex high-tech CPSs that select their optimal settings autonomously within minimal time and with minimal external expertise?"

The ASIMOV Cookbook gathered these good practices and lessons learned. It gives guidance on how to assess whether there is a viable business case, and how to get started. It also gives an overview of the experience in constructing the ASIMOV solution, focusing on the overall architecture, as well as the AI and digital twinning parts. Furthermore, it provides guidance on embedding the solution in the organisation and on considerations to turn the initial solution into a mature and successful result.
