Vattenfall

Vattenfall is an energy company with core markets in Sweden, Germany and the Netherlands but also in Poland, Denmark, Belgium and the UK. The products are power, heat and natural gas and the main energy sources are coal, nuclear and hydro power but biomass and wind power gradually increases in portfolio. The number of employees are about 40 000 where about half are in Germany. In 2010, the total energy production was about 280 TWh (power 173, heat 44 and gas 63).

Vattenfall undertakes research and development (R&D) as part of the Group_s asset development. The aim is to meet the demands and expectations of our customers, to reduce the environmental impact of our operations, to improve the efficiency of our operations and to contribute to develop environmentally sustainable energy solutions.

Within Vattenfall the area of dynamic simulation has increased during the last couple of years and Modelica/Dymola has been chosen as the preferred platform. The focus area is at the moment evaluation of design solutions for the CCS technology. Another coming important area where dynamic modelling will play a key role is the transformation of the current base load power plants to operate with more flexibility in order to meet the new requirements imposed by the increasing part of intermittent power in the grid. Also for areas as maintenance and control, physically-based models will improve the possibilities for a more profitable operation. Within the Vattenfall Group, we have access to measurement data from many different power plant types, ranging from smaller bio-fuelled and larger coal-fired CHP plants to full-sized lignite fired and nuclear power plants.
