EXPLAIN Guidebook - Human-Centered Explainable AI for Process Industries

The ITEA project EXPLAIN (EXPLanatory interactive Artificial intelligence for INdustry) has released its final guidebook: “Human-Centered Explainable AI for Process Industries”.

This publication provides practical guidance for AI developers, engineers, and decision-makers on how to design, develop, and deploy Human-Centered Explainable AI (HCXAI) in process industries such as energy, pulp and paper, mining and power electronics.

The guidebook translates three years of collaborative research into actionable best practices, covering user-centered design approaches, interactive feedback mechanisms, industrial MLOps integration, and lessons learned from real-world use cases. Its aim is to make AI systems more transparent, trustworthy, and usable in industrial environments where safety and efficiency are critical.

Developed with contributions from partners across Germany, Sweden, and the Netherlands, the guidebook reflects the collective expertise of 15 consortium members and 8 industrial use cases.
