Congratulations to our 2025 ITEA Award of Excellence winners!
On 16 September, during the 2025 ITEA Awards of Excellence ceremony in Estoril, four projects were awarded for their impressive results with great benefits for industry and society: EXPLAIN (award for Innovation), IWISH (award for Business impact), IML4E (award for Standardisation), and SIGNET (award for 'Exceptional excellence' for outstanding results in all three categories: Innovation, Business impact and Standardisation).
We are very proud of the impressive results that the EXPLAIN, IWISH, IML4E and SIGNET projects achieved within the ITEA programme. We invite you to learn more about these projects!
EXPLAIN brings explainable, trustworthy and human-centred AI to industry
Despite the growing potential of AI, industrial adoption has often been held back by a lack of trust due to poor explanability. By involving domain experts throughout the machine learning lifecycle, EXPLAIN developed human-centric tools that make AI outputs understandable, transparent, and actionable. Across eight use cases, EXPLAIN delivered interactive prototypes, a public MLOps infrastructure, and a practical guidebook.

IWISH enhances operating room efficiency through AI and data-driven innovation
IWISH enhances operation room (OR) efficiency through real-time procedure tracking and scheduling optimisation. Traditional OR planning systems fail to adapt to the dynamic nature of surgeries, leading to delays and underuse of resources. IWISH addressed this by developing automated, video-based tracking technologies capable of recognising intraoperative phases and activities, even in unobserved procedures.

IML4E simplifies and scales AI adoption for European industry
IML4E is increasing the accessibility of AI and ML automation by delivering MLOps tools, methodologies, and a platform for developing and maintaining AI/ML solutions. With ETSI, the project is actively contributing to standardisation efforts while embracing an open-source philosophy. This strategic approach boosts the scalability, automation, and practical adoption of MLOps, laying the groundwork for a platform with Europe-wide impact.

SIGNET revolutionises MR-guided therapies
SIGNET stands out for its groundbreaking work in transforming complex image-guided medical procedures into personalised, AI-enhanced, MR-guided treatments and interventions that offer better outcomes for patients and greater efficiency for healthcare systems. SIGNET’s success is built around a series of AI-enabled solutions and the COMRADE interface. Thanks to these innovations, different MR-guided therapy devices are brought together and integrated with an MR system in a scalable manner.
